Day 1 of the 2018 Oceania Junior Championships has kicked off at the PCYC Centre in Brisbane with New Zealand starting off with some strong performances. Unfortunately all of the players from Papua New Guinea and Fiji were defeated.
In the Under 11 Boys 2017 winner Matthew Growcott has claimed 2 wins against his Australian counterparts in his pool play.
The Under 13 Boys has seen 4 Kiwis advance to the Quarter Finals with Noah Thomas (1st Seed), Freddie Jameson (5th Seed), Flynn Venmore and Tom Marshall (2nd Seed) taking their wins in 3 to make their way through. They did however take out a number of their New Zealand counterparts on the way with Mikarore Joyce losing out to Noah Thomas and Kyle Steyn losing out to Tom Marshall, Charlie Prince and Ratu Fugawai both lost out to their Australian counterparts in round 2 and 1 respectively. Noah Thomas and Freddie Jameson will compete in the semi-finals of the event after playing their quarter final matches on Day 1 in contrasting style with Thomas claiming his win over 8th seed Australian Kenneth Land 3-0 and Jameson claiming his win over 4th seed Benjamin Murray 3-2.
The Under 13 Girls has seen Ella Lash and Sophie Hodges start strong both taking wins on day 1. Fellow Kiwi Petra Curd-Mccullough unfortunately lost out in her first round match.
The Under 15 Boys has seen Mason Smales, Riley-Jack Vette Blomquist (4th seed), Joe Smythe and Tarin Love make their way through to the quarter finals with Smales upsetting the 8th Seed Josiah Chong of Singapore and Smythe upsetting the 5th seed Luke Eyles to claim their quarter-final spots. Luke Steyn will now compete for a spot in the quarter finals, whilst Paul Moran lost out to Riley-Jack in Round 2.
All 4 girls in the Under 15 draw have proceeded to the Quarter-Finals with Rakaiaroa Joyce upsetting the 8th seed Jessamy Prior of Australia to claim her spot in the top 8.
The Under 17 Boys saw all Kiwis (Glenn Templeton, Elijah Thomas and Henry Moran) make it through to the top 16. All players will have 2 games during day 2 as they seek to make their way through to the semi-finals.
The Under 17 Girls saw a quiet day for New Zealands top 2 players Winona-Jo Joyce and Georgia Robcke as they both had Byes, Leah Hodges (7th seed) has made her way through to the quarter finals whilst Eka Tabakaucoro lost out in round 1.
Lwamba Chileshe and Temwa Chileshe both had Byes on Day 1 of the Under 19 Boys draw, Sean Dykes joined them in the Top 16 whilst Keidah Bungard was unable to get his way past Kevin Walst in Round 1 going down in 5.
In the Under 19 Girls event all the Kiwi players (Zoe Dykzeul, Nadia Hubbard, Courtney Trail and Anika Jackson) have made their way through to the quarter finals with Jackson being the sole player to have a Bye.
