There was a huge crowd at the Steamships Racquet Club today cheering on their teams in the final round of the Squash Prelims.

Once again New Caledonia proved too strong for the other competing countries and are clearly the favourites to take out the Men’s Gold Medal tomorrow.  Although New Caledonia were assured of a place in the Gold Medal match, Fiji and PNG battled it out with some close matches and lots of heart.

Very disappointing for the locals that PNG went down to Fiji 3 rubbers to 1, but the players fought hard and put on a good show for their supporters.  Stand-out for PNG today was Junior Suari defeating Fiji’s No. 1 Justin Ho in straight games.  Unfortunately the rest of the PNG team couldn’t support Junior and Fiji have gone through to the Gold Medal match tomorrow.

PNG Women have come out of top and will be the favourites to take out the Gold.  It won’t be easy with New Caledonia fired up by their Men’s performance and they will have plenty of supporters to lift them today.

The venue will expected to be packed to capacity tomorrow afternoon and evening, especially with PNG featuring in two medal matches.  New Caledonia will also be there in force pulling their support from their team mates from other sports.  Tennis have their medal matches early in the day so many of them and the general public are expected to stay on for the squash finals.
